My Chihuahua makes a really weird noise! any help is appreciated :)?

Question by ♥ back woods barbie.: My Chihuahua makes a really weird noise! any help is appreciated :) ?
I have a 6 month old, 4 lb female Chihuahua and she knows how to speak on command but every time she barks (whether it’s on command or just barking period) she makes a really weird noise.

(Ok I’m trying to think of a way to really explain what it sounds like.)

It’s like she is snoring lol or like a bark that is reversed? I hope that makes sense. Anyway, sometimes she will almost like ‘choke’ on her bark lol She will cough (not like it hurts for her to bark) but it’s like she is clearing her throat.

Anyway, is there a such thing as a bark that sounds reversed in a way? Is anything wrong with Gidget? and do I have to see a vet? I seriously do not think anything is “bad” wrong with her. She barks fine (after she clears her throat lol) but I just want to make sure she don’t need surgery on her throat or anything. I tried googling…no luck. PLEASE HELP ME HELP MY BABY! Thanks in advance to any answers =)

Thank you all! I went on youtube and listened to some dogs who had reversed sneezing and that is what Gidget has. Glad it’s nothing serious! (phew) thank you all so much! I was really starting to get worried..

I don’t know what is wrong with your dog but I do know that a collapsing trachea, a “windpipe” that collapses down flat instead of staying rounded, can be a common and very serious problem in many small dogs.

What you need to do is to take her to the vet and have her make the sound for the vet. If she won’t do it there, you many be wise to bring a recording of the sound along as a backup. The vet should have a pretty good idea of what the sound is when she or he hears it. It may be nothing to worry about or it may be a symptom of a larger problem. Either way, you need to know.

  1. Do you mean like a goose honk? Could be a couple of things.

Something not serious at all is a reverse sneezing lots of dogs get it, its caused by something irritating their sinuses causing them to rapidly breathe in. What you can do to alleviate this is to close the nostrils causing them to breathe through their mouths and to breathe out. Wait till the dog makes a big snort and then let go. It should be fine after that.

Something more serious is a collapsed trachea, this is something you will need to have a vet check out immediately. It is quite serious and life threatening if not treated early.

From you’re description im leaning towards reverse sneezing but I would still go to the vet and have her checked out to be on the safe side.

  2. I think you’re describing the ‘reverse sneeze’ which is perfectly normal. Most dogs go through that continuously. As gross as it sounds, it’s completely harmless. Eating or drinking food/water too fast causes it at times & sometimes they do this for no reason. Go to youtube.com & type in reverse sneeze to hear other dogs w/ it & if that’s what it is, no worries….gross, but normal. Many small dogs go through this – my chihuahua & dachshund both go through this.

  3. I have never heard of a reverse sneeze! lol or bark! but i have a chihuahua and he does something similar he makes this noise when he gets really excited its almost like hes snorting..thats all ive ever thought t really was. it have never caused anyother problems andhe sees the vet regularly never had any problems. when this happens to my lil guy i just hold him and calm him down and it stops immediatly! good luck i hope neither of us have anything serious to worry about!
