Will removing tonsils help stop snoring?
Question by It’s a secret: Will removing tonsils help stop snoring?
I am female and have been told by numerous people that I snore like Fred Flinstone!! Embarassing but I can’t control it! I already use the Breathe Right nose strips and the throat spray, but it seems to have no effect on my overall nightly roar.
Someone told me that I need to get my tonsils removed and it would help prevent me from snoring so badly, but I’ve never heard that before. I always thought that I was going to have to save up lots of money and get surgery done on my nose to stop this “curse”.
If anyone could please give me feedback and let me know maybe some other alternatives that don’t involve surgery, I would be so greatful! Thanks!

I would check with a doctor, I have heard it both ways.

i would check with a doctor but i dont think so because my dad has his and you can still hear him though the wall
Snoring is caused when your soft palate (the fleshy part of the roof of your mouth at the back) falls downwards and partially blocks your throat for a moment. The air travelling passed this causes it to flap and this causes the banging noise (the air escapes through your nasal cavity where it is amplified so it sounds really loud). If you wake up in the morning with a sore sinus area or really dry nose, then this is what is happening.
Getting your adenoids or your tonsils out won’t make any difference (I’ve had both out and snore like a trooper).
Snoring also happens if you sleep with your mouth open and you lay on your back. I always stop when my bedmate elbows me and I turn over in my sleep. Sometimes I’ve snored so loud I’ve woken myself up!
Sleep apnea (spelling?) is the extreme end of snoring and can be dangerous. This is when your breathing stops all together for several seconds, and it can affect heart and bloodpressure. It is worse for people who are very overweight.
If your snoring is really loud and you have any heart, blood pressure or obesity problems you should go to your doctor for a check up and discuss it.
As far as I know (I’m no expert but I saw some medical show recently on it) there is no easy cure for snoring, but losing weight and some special types of pillows can reduce it. There is some contraption you can wear in your mouth (to encourage you not to breath through your mouth) but I don’t think it was scientifically proven to work.
Otherwise, tell your bedmate to use earplugs!
Have you been to an ENT ?(ear, nose, throat Dr) I HAD serious sinus problems and snored like a steam engine. BAD. I went to an ENT and had a CAT scan, he reported back that I had major blocking of my sinus’s caused by polyps. All that plugged air was being exhaled THROUGH my throat when I slept. For me, sinus surgery was the ONLY option. (NOT a real nice procedure, BUT badly needed, for my wife’s sanity) And since then, I have been doing a sinus flush routine 2x daily. That probably won’t help you unless you have your airways repaired but in the meantime, flushing your sinus’s at night won’t hurt. The product I use is called “SinusFlush” (good guess !), and is manufactured by NeilMed, and sold (cheap) otc at Walgreens or Walmart, (or online). Believe me, that’s one of the few items I have ever bought THAT REALLY WORKS. I swear by it and I’m glad to pass the information on. Try it, I’m sure you will see a change. Good luck,,,,,,,,,
